Website builder vs. done-for-you: which is right for you?

If you have the time and enjoy the work, a website builder is cheaper and gives you full control. If your time is better spent running the business and you want someone to answer for the site every month, done-for-you is worth paying for. The deciding question in website builder vs. done-for-you is not which is better, but who you want doing the work, today and in two years.

Website builder vs. done-for-you: what each one means

A website builder, like Wix, Squarespace or GoDaddy's builder, is a tool. You pick a template, write the words, add the photos, set up the forms, publish, and come back whenever something needs to change. The company runs the hosting and the software; everything on the page is up to you.

Done-for-you means a person or a studio does that work. Some build once and hand it over; others, ours included, build the site and then host it and look after it for a monthly fee. You answer questions, send photos and approve the result, and someone else does the rest.

Cost

Builders are cheaper in money. Wix's paid website plans start at $17 a month, billed yearly (as of October 2026). Squarespace's website plans start at $19 a month, billed yearly (as of October 2026). GoDaddy lists its Website Builder's Basic plan at $9.99 a month on an annual plan (as of October 2026). Add a domain and perhaps a paid add-on or two.

Done-for-you costs more in money and less in time. On our plans, Launch is $195 a month, Growth is $295, Signature is $395 and Dominate is $795, each on a 12-month agreement with no setup fee, with the design, writing, hosting and monthly care included. A one-time freelancer build is a different shape again; our guide to website costs compares all of them.

Time

This is the cost people underestimate. A first site on a builder takes most owners several evenings or weekends, and the writing is usually the slowest part. After launch, every new service, price change, holiday notice and broken form is yours to handle.

With done-for-you, your part is mostly answering questions and saying yes or no. On our plans, a guided onboarding with Elena, our AI assistant, takes about fifteen to twenty minutes, the first draft usually arrives 1 to 2 weeks after that, and you have 14 days to review the first draft and send us one list with every change you want; we revise the draft from it, and nothing goes live until you approve it. After launch, you ask for changes in your portal instead of making them.

Control

A builder gives you full control at any hour. If you like to tinker, or your business changes every week, that is a real advantage.

Done-for-you gives you control through someone else. You decide what changes, and they make it. The trade is less hands-on control in return for not having to know how. Ask any done-for-you company how fast changes happen and how you ask for them; on our plans you ask in your portal and we aim to finish included updates within a few business days, as a target and not a promise.

What you own when you leave

This one is easy to overlook and matters most later. Wix says a Wix site cannot be moved to another host: it runs only on Wix's own servers (as of October 2026). Squarespace can export some of a site's content as a file for WordPress, but not every page type, and not the design or style settings (as of October 2026). With both, your domain can move with you, but the site itself mostly stays behind.

Done-for-you companies vary just as much, so ask before you sign. Our answer: your site, your content and your domain are yours outright. Once you approve a draft, or the first-draft guarantee ends, you can download a full copy of the site from your portal at any time, and if we hold your domain we release it to any registrar you choose within 14 days of you asking. One exception: if a plan payment is refunded under the first-draft guarantee (Agreement 2.15), that design is not handed over, downloaded or exported. Your own content (your text, photos and logos) and your domain stay yours in every case.

When a builder is the better choice

Be honest with yourself here. A builder is the better fit when:

  • You enjoy design and writing and have the time for them
  • Your budget for the site is very small right now
  • You need to change the site yourself several times a week
  • You want an online store with many products and features a builder already has
  • You are testing an idea and may change direction in a few months

When done-for-you is the better choice

Done-for-you fits when your time is worth more in the business than on the website, when you want a site that looks professional without learning design, and when you want one person to answer for it if something breaks. It especially suits service businesses, where the site's job is to make the phone ring and the work after launch is steady and small.

Whichever way you lean: Our free audit scores your current site's speed, how it works on a phone and its search basics in about 30 seconds, and it costs nothing. Enter your website and email: your results show on the screen and we email you the full report.

Questions people ask

Is a website builder cheaper than done-for-you?

In money, yes. In time, usually no: the design, the writing and every change after launch are yours to do.

Can I switch from a builder to done-for-you later?

Yes. Your domain can usually move, and your words and photos can be reused. Some builders do not let the site itself move, so it is often rebuilt rather than moved.

Who writes the words on a done-for-you site?

It depends on the company. On our plans, we write them from your answers to Elena's questions, and you approve every page before it goes live.

Is Elena a person?

No. Elena is our AI assistant: software, not a person. She guides your onboarding and takes update requests in your portal, and real people review and approve every site before it goes live.
